Besides these flaws, it was a wonderful listen. Very well read Christopher Downie I am in the situation that many high schoolers have been put through, as I have to read this for homework, but unfortunately I cant sit and read the book by myself. This audiobook has helped greatly so far, with great clarity and enunciation, gripping changes of tone and accent, and a warm, welcome narrative. I have greatly enjoyed listening to this book so far, and I reckon I will have listened to the full book by Monday (It is Thursday right now) Yet again, thank you for this recording. All around joyful book and listening experience jeremy I find it hard to believe I never read this book as a child and this was my first time doing so. This book captivated me and the narrator read it so well. I will recommend this book to anyone needing a good read. Also, mark Smith was such a charismatic and clear reader that im in search of my next book as we speak.... read by him off course:) Great Expectations Ray/Shane Restaino This reading is a great modern adaptation of this classic book.

Reviews Made picturing the story at lot easier than reading The Rainbow Brony Like most American Teenagers, I can't stand reading a novel for more than 5 minutes without dieing of boredom. However with this recording I found it much easier to understand the story and simply enjoyed it much more than if I had to read it! P. S. Got an A on my book report:D Excellent! This is my second time listening to this audio recording and I think Mark Smith does an excellent job. He enunciates all his words and is very clear and easy to understand. He also does a great job bringing the characters to life by giving them each their very own distinct voice. Very well done! Superb Jeremiah This is a great book, it has a good amount of humor, mixed with an interesting plot, and melancholy approaches to issues of the times. The recording itself is very well done, but not perfect. His voices are great (although Joe sounds a bit too similar to Goofy for me), but there are echoes in some of the tracks, and a mechanical scratching which can be a bit of a headache.

Only I'm not entirely sure that is a good idea. Thy have both changed, with Estella having come down off her high horse and Pip having learnt stability and hard work since they were children. I'm just not convinced the possibly happy ending is justified. I felt, as I often do with Dickens, that he spends 2/3 of the book setting it up and then crams the final third with all the story. It works though, and the pace sits will with the episodic listening. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4/5) I've discovered that listening to Dickens in the car is actually a reasonable way to get through a big old book. Was this review helpful for you?
There are many parts of Dickens' writing that I love and few pieces of his that fall short of complete adoration. 'Great Expectations' is one more of Dickens' absolute masterpieces. I love how with 100 pages left you can almost feel the universe shift as Dickens grabs the crazy, once loose strings of his moral narrative and begins to pull it all together. I think a significant part of the magic, for me, of 'Great Expectations' is found in the minor characters. Everyone from Uncle Pumblechook, Miss Havisham, & Mr Jaggers, to Mr. Wemmick and the Aged Parent (the Aged P. ) could be the center of their own Dickens novel; each life is given a warmth (or where there lacks warmth, a round coldness) that keeps the novel propelled on. You can't have a Dickens novel without a little bit of melodrama and a bit of Victorian moralizing. However, with 'Great Expectations', Dickens does this with a soft touch. He isn't as confrontational about social ills as he is in 'Hard Times' or 'Oliver Twist' and he isn't as melodramatic as he was in 'Tale of Two Cities', but even so, I completely enjoyed this gentle, more muted Dickens.

Mr. Mark Smith captures the essence of Pip, the innocent youth who matures throughout the book and becomes a much better person despite the obstacles in his path. He gains insight, kindness, a sense of justice, and a social conscience! All the while retaining his American English accent, which will attract American youth! Great job, Mr. Smith! Perfectly voiced Mark does an amazing job reading this book. I listened to it twice back-to-back and loved every moment. I would love for Mark to read The Catcher In The Rye or The Chocolate War or the great Day Bradbury's poetic prose Dandelion Wine and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Even though I found the novel quite long sometimes, I am 2/3 through it now I really appreciate it so far. The reader is amazing he gives life to the different characters of the novel, best reading I've listened to!
He helps the convict with food, but then gets involved in the chase to catch him again. It's an important meeting that has echoes through the rest of Pip's young life. In an unconnected event, Pip gets invited to Miss Haversham's and meets Estella. This is a very odd setup (understatement). In the short term it gives Pip some heartache and ideas above his station. This, again, has repercussions through the story and is a source of some considerable upheaval. Pip becomes Joe's apprentice, but his ideas of being a gentleman and winning Estella blind him to both Joe's goodness and the charms and affection of Biddy. He, in fact, turns into a snob and acts quite badly in this phase. Then comes the big turning point, Pip comes into his Great Expectations. The assumption is that the expectations are from Miss Haversham, certainly that's what everyone seems to think. And Pip becomes even worse. He goes to town and sets up an expensive establishment with Herbert, who is a Haversham relation of some description.
